Blah Blah Bleeeee Blah!!!

I am presently at work and HATING it. My job at UCSD (in sleep research) sucks such copious amounts of ass that I can't believe I've stayed here for three years. Bad management... non-existent training... what I call a "Crazytown logic" that seems to rule the day. It's like my own little slice of Purgatory right here in sunny San Diego.

I've been on a little crusade as of late against Netflix... I can't understand why the turnaround that used to be 1-3 days is taking 7-8. I 'do' Netflix because a)I LOATHE Blockbuster and their ilk, b) I work nights so getting to a video store is difficult, c) their selection USED TO BE ok... Lately though, I'm realizing that I've been a film fan all my life; sometimes watching 3-4 movies (but always at least one a day. I make a concerted effort to see EVERYTHING. At this stage of the game, I've seen just about everything there is out there. I was recently told about a new service for Region Free discs which houses obscure Asian and European films called Nicheflix (www.nicheflix.com). I may make the jump to there if Netflix doesn't pull their heads out. See... Netflix 'works' when you can get a movie, watch it, and then return it in the space of 24 (or so) hours. With their new slower service, it starts to not make monetary sense.

What else is buggin' me...

Man, I sat through a few nights of that new Adam Carolla show on Comedy Central. Horrible...
The show is like crib death... only not as funny.

I did find that our local cable pusher (Cox Cable Company - the jokes write themselves, don't they?) offers something called AZN; "Television for Asian Americans." What's awesome is that they play these REALLY obscure Kung-fu movies at 3 or 4 in the morning. They also run a MTV-like show called Popjapan.tv (ww.popjapan.tv) featuring music videos. Most of the music is pop music... like something you'd see on any music video show... EXCEPT that the production values are sublime and the musicianship is exemplary.
Also, it helps that they show a lot of very pretty asian women.

So... we've covered work... movies... Carolla sucking up the joint...

This weekend I plan to unplug the phone, disconnect from the family, and sit myself down in an attempt to hammer out a WORKABLE schedule for everything I've committed to (the writing, the training, time to be with the Fam, etc). Also, I just heard that John Saxon is scheduled to appear at a monthly Los Angeles Comic Book Show at the Shriner Auditorium on Sunday. Normally, I'd pass as I've met John before, but... he plans on showing a slide show featuring photos taken during the filming of ENTER THE DRAGON. Being the Bruce fan that I am, I may have to go up there to check it out...

Speaking of John Saxon...
A few years ago, I attended a Fango show in LA. Saxon was there because he was in the first NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET film. So, we're sitting in this huge auditorium with several hundred people. Saxon talks a bit about the making of NIGHTMARE and then they open the floor for 30 minutes ("And ONLY 30 minutes," said the moderator) of Q&A. The crowd is abuzz with people preparing to ask their "What's Freddy REALLY like?" questions. However, I leap to my feet, shoot my hand into the air, and get recognized. I ask my question: "So, Freddy... yadda yadda yadda... Fuck 'im! Listen, I would never forgive myself if I was in the same room with you and I didn't ask you about the filming of ENTER THE DRAGON." The crowd is like, "Wha...?!!?!" Saxon goes on to talk for over 45 minutes about Bruce, filmin the movie, the whole shebang. The segment ends and Saxon comes over to talk a bit more. We chat and I walk him out. For the rest of the day, I kept getting these 'dirty looks' from all the Freddy fans because I DARED to derail their time with someone who ACTUALLY got close to their idol! Freaks!

Ok... so.. I do plan on updating this little thang more than I have been.
I keep allowing stupid shit to get in the way of the things I like doing.
I will try to be true to this...

I liked your John Saxon story! He's on my favorite actors. He's made so many great movies like Enter the Dragon but Nightmare on Elm Street is not one of them. If the Fango attendees were real horror fans they would have asked him what it was like to work with great Italian horror directors like Mario Bava and Dario Argento. Fools I say! ^_~

Sorry to hear the job is growing in suckage. The plus side I guess is security, since in general I know most folks won't work graveyard shifts. (I will try not to myself).

Glad to hear you will be getting back onboard creatively... There's not much other choice than to get back on the horse, no? ;)

On John Saxon:
First reaction- he's still alive? (It's kinda sad that if you don't see an actor always making movies or on tv, one assumes he/she's dead)

Sounds like he was a cool dude, I remember you mentioning part of the story about asking Saxon about Lee before. I've got one of the books you reccomended awhile ago about Lee--- can't help but wonder how he would've developed in his later years if he'd lived- hopefully not doing horrible comedies with Jennifer Love Hewitt, like some sell-outs. ;)
